A paper published in Cell on September 11 describes giving surface-modified bone marrow cells from the patients themselves to ten women with advanced osteoporosis. The authors’ abstract reports fewer fractures and improved indicators of bone regeneration.

The registry describes a phase 1 study without masking or a control group, primarily focused on safety. This design cannot reliably separate the intervention’s effect from other influences.

Editorial outlook: if confirmed, more targeted cell delivery could expand regenerative medicine’s options. Comparative trials, long-term safety and reproducible manufacturing of the cell product will be decisive. The result is not a reason to change current treatment.
