On September 10, OpenAI opened the Agents API public beta: a managed agent execution layer based on Codex.
The documentation describes sessions and a separate working environment. Our editorial concern is whether unfinished work can be inspected and safely handed over, not merely whether an agent writes an impressive conclusion.
Imagine comparing technical quotations overnight. An assistant could prepare differences and links to supporting documents; an engineer could investigate inconsistencies in the morning instead of transcribing. This is a possible workflow, not a time saving demonstrated here.
Before deployment, we would require a test set, restricted document access, a spending cap and human approval for external actions. Retrying a task must not send an order twice. A retained intermediate result is not automatically correct either.
Optimistically, a small noncritical process could have a pilot built and evaluated within 2–6 weeks, if its data are organized and integration is simple. This is an editorial estimate; broad deployment should depend on the checks.
