On September 16, Mozilla and Mistral announced Mistral Small 4 for Firefox Smart Window beta. Mozilla identifies the US, Canada and expansion to France with French-language support. Other models are to remain selectable; this does not announce a mandatory switch for every Firefox user.

Smart Window helps people resume searches and navigate information from their browsing. Today’s news concerns a new model partner and availability; the assistant itself was introduced in August.

Mistral describes a zero-retention commitment by the model partner and says conversations are not stored on Mozilla servers by default. Those statements concern data handling; they do not establish exclusively on-device processing. Announcements by both partners are also not an independent privacy audit.

Our editorial outlook: the benefit could be comparing models on the same research task without changing browsers. A useful test should examine fidelity to linked sources, understanding of the specific language and how easily people control the context being shared.

Our optimistic editorial estimate is 2–6 weeks for a small comparison in a supported region. That could reveal practical differences, not guarantee the quality of every answer. The announcement gives no availability date for Czechia or Italy.
